The ASME SA240 Stainless Steel Coil 316 Grade is used mostly in construction industry and in the structural applications. The welding operations use Stainless Steel 316 Strip to fill the gaps in structural applications. The strips are also used as liners of larger structures. The material has chromium, nickel and molybdenum in its composition. The molybdenum content adds corrosion resistance to this austenitic stainless steel grade. The plates could either be hot rolled or cold rolled. The UNS S31600 Hot Rolled Plate is stronger and has rough surface. Machining, forming and cold working for hardening is relatively difficult on this plate than on the cold rolled ones. The DIN 1.4401 / 1.4436 Cold Rolled Plates are seamless and can be cold worked. They could also be machined heat treated for hardening. The application as ASTM A240 Type 316 Plate is possible where two or more components join together and the space between the components needs to be filled. The applications include furnace parts, heat exchangers, chemical processing equipment, valve and pump parts and others due to the high temperature resistance and the high corrosion resistance of the material grade.
